Christine Vilord of Notus Jr. /Sr. High School

CapEd, Capital Educators Federal Credit Union, awarded a Mini April Teacher Grant of the Month to Christine Vilord of Notus Jr. /Sr. High School.

Vilord will use the grant to establish a listening center to assist struggling readers and readers who are Limited English Proficient. Students will read the novel And Then There Were None and participate in online discussions with students at another area high school. (more…)

CapEd, Capital Educators Federal Credit Union, awarded its third April Teacher Grant of the Month to Anne-Marie Bebber and Debbie Jenson of Lowell Scott Middle School.

Bebber and Jenson will use the grant to purchase library books for English learners, as well as special education, resource, and literacy lab students. Many Lowell Scott ESL students read at 2nd-3rd grade levels where there are few enticing books available. (more…)

Summerwind First Graders to Learn Science through Inquiry-Based Lessons

Cap Ed, Capital Educators Federal Credit Union, awarded its second April Teacher Grant of the Month to Alyson Ogata of Summerwind Elementary School.

Ogata will use the grant to purchase equipment for a mobile science lab. Summerwind Math and Science Magnet School is a Title-One school, and first graders currently don’t have the ability to experience a mobile lab with hands-on learning. (more…)

Eagle Teacher Uses Music to Increase Reading Fluency

CapEd, Capital Educators Federal Credit Union, awarded its first $750 April Teacher Grant of the Month to Lynne Groening of Eagle Hills Elementary School.

Groening will use the grant to purchase instruments such as guiros, maracas, drums, temple blocks, chimes, and wood sticks to increase reading fluency and comprehension. Her students have shown tremendous results by using music to make reading fluency exciting. (more…)

March, 2010 Teacher Grant Winner Linda McMillin

CapEd, Capital Educators Federal Credit Union, awarded its third $750 March Teacher Grant of the Month to Linda McMillin of Notus Junior/Senior High School.

McMillin will use the grant to purchase art supplies to begin an art program in Notus.

McMillin was hired to teach art after students indicated a strong desire for an art program. However, materials needed to run an art program have been hard to come by. (more…)
