CapEd NAMES 1st FEBRUARY TEACHER GRANT OF THE MONTH IN MERIDIAN
February 23, 2010 – CapEd, Capital Educators Federal Credit Union, awarded its first $750 February Teacher Grant of the Month to Shane Stevenson of Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian. Stevenson will use the grant to purchase microchips to plant in Tilapia fish to help students track individual fish health and growth.

The science department recently added an aquaculture program to connect students with real world application of science. Identifying fish individually generates endless opportunities to enrich the learning process.

Students will benefit by connecting with real life systems and exploring career and research pathways. “This project will appeal to auditory, bodily kinesthetic, and visual learners,” says Stevenson. “By implementing non-traditional high-stimulation learning lab activities students will gain a new appreciation for scientific inquiry.” Students will also have the opportunity to connect with industry experts and field technicians.

Todd Erickson, CEO of CapEd, said “that the grant program is designed to give teachers a wide variety of opportunities to bring new teaching tools, activities, and materials directly to the students. The expansion of the program to three grants per month this year gives us the opportunity to help teachers achieve their education goals at the classroom level.”

All teachers in the CapEd membership area are eligible to apply. Details of the Teacher Grant of the Month program are available online at www.CapEdfcu.org. For further information, email Kathy Palumbo at kathy@capedfcu.org.

The deadline for Teacher of the Month grant applications is the 10th of every month through April 2010.

Caldwell Grant Winner Will Showcase Student Work in Literary Magazine

CapEd, Capital Educators Federal Credit Union, awarded its second $750 February Teacher Grant of the Month to Andrea Arnold of Caldwell High School. Arnold will use the grant to produce Cougar Tracks, a literary magazine that will showcase students’ artistic and literary work.

“This project will encourage students from all walks of life to work together to create something that can be enjoyed by the entire student body,” says Arnold. Literary and artistic work will be collected from the student body, and Arnold’s Creative Writing class will edit and produce the magazine. Aside from the school yearbook, this will be the only school-wide publication.

Arnold is constantly trying to broaden students’ minds and creativity. With this project she hopes to start a tradition that can continue for years to come and will recognize and honor students who may not otherwise receive the attention they deserve.
